Is the character Yurick meant to invoke the Shakespeare character from Hamlet ("Yorick" - the one whose skull is being handled while Hamlet delivers his famous monologue on death)? I assumed so on first viewing, but i'm not sure if "Yurick" is a common Czech name or no ...
shareI think that Jakubisko is playing on words. The name Juraj (George in ENG) is very common in Slovakia and is pronounced "Yuray". Jurik (pronounced Yuri:ck) is sometime used as a diminutive for Juraj.
And Yorick is not a common name at all here, and surely it refers to Hamlet.
In addition Jakubisko has a son named Jorik (pronounced as "Yorick"), so it would not be a coincidence. :)
