This movie needs a remake
It should be called "Huge-Ass-Dinosaur Mountain".

I might watch a movie called Huge-Ass Dinosaur Mountain. But otherwise I wouldn't want to see a remake of this. The only thing good about it is Ray Harryhausen's special effects. The story stinks.

This film could be remade well. Up the special effects to a Jurassic Park level. Up the cowboys to a 3:10 to Yuma level. Make the dinosaurs terrifying. Change all of the cheesey "indian/mexican curse" storyline to something more interesting and it could work.

If there is a remake- it should be set in the war-torn Middle East, either Iraq or Afghanistan. Imagine: Fighting soldiers looking for insurgents discover an isolated valley with a Gwangi-like creature and other prehistoric animals. There are a lot of possibilities there....

Jeez, I HOPE not...it would be MORE 'SciFi Channel' dreck...
But couldn't it be said that 'Gwangi' is a sort of remake/homage to another movie made by Willis O'Brien called "Beast of Hollow Mountain"?

This is probably the only movie that I've ever felt should be remade. Naturally, I love the original, but aside from Ray Harryhausen's effects, James Franciscus as the lead guy, Jerome Moross' score and the premise of cowboys and dinosaurs, the film in general is very flawed and a real missed opportunity. If it could be remade without Hollywood having the usual excess of souless CGIs or stupid, bombastic endings, it could be pretty special. The best thing to do would be to keep the plot simple and not show Gwangi too much or have him do ridiculous cartoonish type things - that is, make it less like Jackson's King Kong, and more like Spielberg's Jaws. On top of that the south-west setting should be evoked more. For instance, bring in cattle drive scenes and dust storms; perhaps have a scene where where Gwangi is chasing a steam-train, or something like that...

How about changing the setting to one where it is futuristic and instead of collecting earth's lifeforms from it's younger days, why not have renegade archaeologists collecting wild alien lifeforms from across the universe?

I think a fun remake would work in the vein of Stephen Sommers' Mummy films and in 3D.
The direction and cinematograpy makes the original film hard to watch for me.
I'd love to see a remake but done very close to the original. I'd have Gwangi looking the same [even the blueish grey colour]. he could have evolved over time so he looks like Harryhausens puppet with the thick set features [instead of like an ancient Allosaurus] and the same with the other dinosaurs. Peter Jackson did a similar thing with the V Rex so it looked like Wilis O Briens original T Rex.
it would have to be set in cowboy times so it could be explained how lost places still exist but they'd have to explain how a valley could support all these big creatures. the only way they could do it is have Gwangi and the styracosaurus be the biggest creatures [no sauropods] but there'd be plenty of food for Gwangi with plenty of smaller dinosaurs. the valley would have to stretch for miles and parts of it could have rock formations that hide the dinosaurs from humans but some people might have glimpsed them ......leading to legends over the years and people being afraid to go there because of 'demons' etc.
I think it could be a great remake done properly and with a dedication to Harryhausen at the beginning.
