I am a big John Wayne fan, and this picture is one of my favorites.
However, did anyone besides me think Roman Gabriel looked silly as an Indian?

I wouldn't say silly, but not quite right, he's very round faced and with the hair, perhaps your right, yes a bit silly, oh well.

No disrespect to John Wayne or the others but Hollywood does better job of casting Native Americans today than they used to. That is progress.

I agree.
more than a few choices made to portray Native Americans back then, were dreadful.

They were good movies and the actors played their parts well but there is no way it would fly with Chuck Connors and Jeff Chandler, to mention two, as Native Americans today.

One of the worst was Roman Gabriel as a Native American.(The Undefeated)
(he played for the Rams then)

Idk. I just found out about this film today and Roman who played a NA is actually half Filipino (his father), and today or a few years ago there's Lou Diamond Phillips and that guy from Third Watch, both half Filipino and favor their Filipino side and have played NAs too. I think all three can effectively pass as NA even with short hair actually. It's the wig that's terrible and his acting, lol!
