THE FIRST AND BEST ARGENTO GIALLO

Unbeliveable film and the revealing of the killer shocked me!!

*SPOILER AHEAD DO NOT READ AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN'T YET SEEN THIS FILM OR WANT TO SEE IT*

I was absolutely shocked when it was revealed that Mrs Ranieri was the killer because she was the attempted murder victim in the beginning. It was then told that she was stabbed by her husband who wanted her dead. I have one question though. Since Mr Ranieri was left-handed does he also kill in this movie? I want to know every detail if possible.

Thanks.

I agree, to be honest I would say that this is better that Deep Red

Mr. Ranieri did not kill in this movie, the police gathered the information that he was left handed from the crime scene of the attempted murder of his wife.

I do believe however that it was in fact mr Ranieri who ordered the hitman to kill our main character, to protect his wife

The husband wasn't trying to kill his wife at the beginning. She was trying to kill him. She only got stabbed by accident.

The mystery was sort of spoiled for me because I figured out early on that the killer was female. It was just a question of who and how. By the end, I assumed that the red head and the hero's girlfriend were in it together and took turns attacking each other to throw everybody off track.

I have my own mind. And as a reward, I get to use it.

Just watched the movie. Had very high expectations.. but was dissapointed :(...
too many plot holes...

In the first place.. why would you like to murder someone in place that is right on the street, separated only by glass panes. Especially when its night, all lights are lit inside and its dark outside and so anyone on the street will be able to see whats happening inside.
In all the murders/murder attempts shown the killer never seems bothered when her victims are screaming for help. Is there a rule in Italy that only one apartment should be occupied in an entire apartment complex so that even if the people there were to scream no one would listen?
The killer is sooooooooooooooooooooo good at killing everyone else, then why is she always finding it tough to kill her husband.
Towards the end Julia was shown tied up so well that she could not even move, then how did she inform the police. At that point the police would be under the assumption that they have got the killer so I don't think they will do all the investigation Sam did to find Monica's secret place(where Julia is tied up).
What about the 2 men supposed to guarding the Sam's apartment? Where are they when Monica tries to kill Julia.
How is Monica able to lure 2 people from her husbands apartment to her secret apartment? If they came down on the pretext of safety then I presume it would be enough to just get to the street.
The way I see it she could have still continued killing had she kept silent and done nothing after her husband fell down.
Many.. many more... Will watch another giallo sometime soon.. hope its better than this one. :(...

It´s probably his best, storywise. Still, my alltime favorite of his would be Suspiria.

The theater is like a faithful wife. The film is the great adventure, the costly, exacting mistress

I've only seen this and Suspiria and for me it's by far the better of the two.

Most people have already addressed the question, so I'll just respond to the title of the thread...

I don't think it's his best, though it is very good.

The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is an amazing debut and one that set Argento up as one of the best Italian filmmakers of his generation, but I still prefer his later films, Profondo rosso and Tenebrae. "Bird" may be the most important gialli after Bava's The Girl Who Knew Too Much, but those Argento films prove he wasn't just some imitator churning out cheap knock-offs like Strip Nude for Your Killer or The Cat With the Jade Eyes, but a real visionary intent on pushing the genre as far as he could take it.

These days he probably isn't one of the best Italian filmmakers of his generation, but Profondo rosso and Tenebrae (along with the supernatural films Suspiria and Inferno) remain a testament to what an extraordinary talent he used to be.

Well it´s certainly less goofy than Suspiria which is the only other Argento picture I´ve seen. Ain´t quite ´that´ schlocky, really (although the idiotically cackling "doer broad" in the end was pushing it... hard). The acting may be mediocre at best and the dialogue frequently silly, but it does feature impressive cinematography, creative & effective sound editing plus several scenes of well played suspense. Overall rather solid - 7-7,5/10.

This is a very good film storywise as is the acting of the lead actor and the man playing the police inspector. In terms of story with a twist Deep Red edges it.

It was my understanding that the husband was killing the women to be able to sympathise with his wife - isn't that what the psychiatrist said? She kept trying to kill him because her fear and paranoia returned once she saw the painting of the man attacking the woman. And he, out of desperation, went out and killed innocent women.

Bird with the Crystal Plumage is good, but I thought Cat O' Nine Tails was a far better giallo; better plot, better sense of style, and great murder scenes. I think Cat is easily the best of the Animal Trilogy.
