I love Hitchcock but

Topaz looks like a b grade Italian spy movie with some good American support actors. It looks like 2 or 3 different movies cut together. The only thing joining it together is the very weak Frederick Stafford as a poor man's James Bond. They should have hired Neil Connery from Operation Kid Brother aka O.K Connery. Loved most of Hitchcock's films and TV series. Lost the touch after Marnie. Though I loved the purple dress scene.

At least the full length DVD version is better than the orignal cut I saw in the theater in 1969. But it does fall flat at the end, despite a worthy attempt.

The dueling scene would've been the only realistic ending . . . anything else would be trite . . .

I bought a set of 14 Hitchcock films on bluray, this one included.

I can see why films like Psycho and Rear Window are so beloved ... They are still quite watchable today.

But, tbh, if Topaz was the only kind of movie Hitchcock had made, he would have been forgotten by now.
