best movies set in the 1930s

'They Shoot Horses' is sure one downer of a good movie, painful to watch, perhaps slightly over-rated. Anyhow, here are a few of my choices for the best movies set in the 1930s:

Last Tycoon
Frances
They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
Day of the Locust
The Sting
Aviator
Public Enemies
Cabaret
Chinatown

I notice a goodly amount of 30s period pieces – and the literature written during that era – are unremittingly downbeat, depressing or cynical, with a singularly pessimistic view of human nature and the human condition. Oh, well, them was the times. Also interesting is that most of the films on my list were made 30 to 40 years after the Depression.

I have to say one of the best movies set in the 30's that I have seen, is "Dillinger" (1973). Starring Warren Oates and directed/written by John Milius. I live in the rural Midwest. And one of the most impressive things about the move for me, was how it captures beautifully the look and feel of the rural Midwest in the 1930's. It was actually filmed in rural Oklahoma and Nebraska.
