Susannah York (Alice)'s eyes during the shower scene

Was anyone else frozen by her eyes in that scene? York did an excellent job of breaking apart scene-by-scene, but her final scene in the shower with those glaring, wide eyes hypnotized me and I could not even blink when the camera was on her face. I can't believe she did not get the Oscar for this film, amazing.

I am so glad you said this; I had the same reaction! I remember the first time I saw it, I couldn't look at the screen~it freaked me out! The close-up shots in this movie, are what made the movie great. The actors really brought out the "realism" of the story; how horrible it must have REALLY been!

Susannah should have run away with the Oscar. She is one of my fave actresses and this performance is at least tied for her best with Images. Goldie Hawn for Cactus Flower??? Not even close...

You said it!...USA wins over the UK once again...Goldie against York in the acting stakes...a joke!....York is a fantastic actress, although I heard that she was not too keen on this film. Anyone know anymore on this rumour?

I also think she is brilliant in Images, one of my favorite films...very unusual plot that keeps you guessing with twist after twist...

reply

oh absolutely. all of the women's eyes seemed like they were on the verge of tears thru the whole movie. and everytime jane fonda cried, man. brutal movie.

I honestly don't think most of the actors from the film had good things to say about it. It had a really good message, but the script had a lot of holes & didn't even come CLOSE to following the novel. I felt that the script was horribly written & would've been a lot better had we received more depth into the characters backgrounds...It was a phenomenal film but I feel that it had a lot more potential than was actually shown on film.

In the novel TSHDT? the health department closes the marathon and the remaining contestants split the prize;not much. The film adds characters and incidents that weren't in the novel. The novel by Horace McCoy is short and very effective and told by Robert.

That is so cool~thanks for the extra info! I'll have to read the book; something new always comes up. All I know is everytime I watch this movie, I'm haunted for hours after. To know that this was a "real" way of life; that there were "real" people who did this, because they had no where else to turn. It was better to live under these circumstances; they had a bed to rest on(yeah, right~what little rest they got!), food to eat and all they had to do was dance. I can't imagine there was any money left; like Rocky said, the "expenses" were split already. But, I guess back then, a little money was better than what they had! Thanks again!

The part of the movie that I find unbelievable, and it's not in the novel, is when Rocky says that they have been keeping "tabs" on the contestants; not likely. Again, in the book the marathon is forced to close; in the film Gloria quits and the marathon goes on.

her eyes and expression were amazing in that shower scene.

my take is that the movie was carefully and specifically crafted to create a feeling. something we don't see often. and it does that very very well. the slow pacing and the way it unrolls makes you feel like you are in the marathon yourself.

I actually took a screen cap because it was so haunting:

I would watch it again and again. - blinkmaneast90, IMDb

She should have won the Oscar for that shower scene alone. Still haunts me when I hear the title of this film mentioned. The look on her face is chilling and very real. I wonder how she got into "the zone" to play that scene. And everyone's reactions to her face looks genuinely disturbed too!

York's best performance ever!

She was unbelievable, her breakdown is one of the best moments of the film and she completely deserved the Oscar for this film.

It was a magnificent display of talent. Quite disturbing and gave me chills (in a good sense, of course).
