Would you watch this film again?

A sincere question. I saw this sucker in the theater when it first was shown and it has definitely rattled around in my brain ever since. And while I admired the film, I am not sure I'd want to subject myself to it again. This was always a bit of a very odd duck of a movie.

Absolutely! I'm watching it right now. (This is the fourth time for me -- I usually watch it once a year.)

Once you know "the ending" you can go back and watch the movie and better appreciate the performances, the costumes and the dialogue. (Don't get me wrong -- the ending always feels like a punch in the stomach.)

To me this a rare instance where the movie is better than the book.

absolutely. i saw this movie in the middle of the night when i was a child, or perhaps when i was a young teenager. that was more than thirty years ago. i was impressed by the performances of jane fonda, michael sarrazin, susannah york, et al. i haven't gotten around to seeing it because i've been preoccupied with indie films from the seventies and eighties, sci fi pictures, and horror movies. perhaps one day i should make a concerted effort to view (or re-view) some of the "artistically ambitious" films of the sixties, movies such as "flim flam" (with michael sarrazin), "the illustrated man," and "they shoot horses, don't they?"

p.s.l--"they shoot horses, don't they?" IS an odd duck of a movie. an ugly yet at the same time beautiful duckling of a movie. it's much more artistically ambitious and "darker" than most of the american-produced films of the sixties. it might be thought of as having the same kind of "vibe" as "easy rider" or even peter bogdanovich's "targets."

Yes, I have, but definitely not like every year but once every two years is alright, because it's really a terrific film and you always find new things to it and the performances are always worth rewatching.

This was definitely one of the most depressing movies ever made, but its social value as a historical testament to the depression and the depths people would sink to to survive make it one of my favorites. I had a hard time finding this on DVD about 10 years ago. Now I still rewatch it every 2 or 3 years.

"We'll be rich." "We'll buy a yacht." " We'll go fishin'." "Ya got worms?" "Yeah, but I"ll go anyway."

I have the movie on DVD and watch bits and parts every so often. It's just that kind of movie would not be made today and that has me more appreciative of that time in moviemaking, where films didn't give care that every movie had to have an upbeat ending.

I used to drag out my VHS copy when i was really depressed - like the blues, it made me feel better.

The subject matter is super depressing but it's really shot in a interesting way, so you can re watch it to admire the direction.
