Probably just my dirty imagination but...

There seemed to be some sexual desire/lust from Mr. Hargood for his daughter Alice. Especially when he was drunk and telling her he was going to whip her, he rubbed his hand up and down her bare arm, looked down her cleavage at one point and said "I'm going to whip you Alice" like he really meant "I'm going to *beep* you Alice". And it would stand to reason that he hated Paul Paxton because he was jealous - and even the whore he had on his knee at the room of debauchery kind of resembled Alice in a way. Great movie by the way. I got this in a box set of 4 Draculas: Horror of Dracula, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, Taste the Blood, and AD 1972 - which is not that great. But I love these other three. Linda Hayden and Veronica Carlsen were such gorgeous little hotties!

Yes, that is strongly implied. It's likely that he had been driven to the seedier side of town in an attempt to purge himself of his lust for his daughter.

reply

Nah, not your imagination. I picked up on that, too. Then again, maybe I'm also a dirty bugger.

Well Alice WAS bloody hot. Yum.

It never fails to amaze me just how many lovely ladies Hammer had in their films. True beauties, contrast with the usual average women in today's Hollywood films.

Hammer really used to know how to pick 'em and then style them. Lovely.

I certainly agree with you about the Hammer lovelies (I especially love Veronica Carlson).

Have you seen that book HAMMER GLAMOUR? It is packed with many colour photos of all the Hammer actresses.

that was indeed what was implied. even her replies point to that. she says "if you touch me i will never forgive you" isntead of "dont hurt me/if you hurt me" which can imply that he is going to punish her in other way than beating up. he aslo mentions he "Havent punished here since she was a child" so hes a paedophile too.

I strongly picked up on that vibe as well. Horrible character. Glad he gets his just desserts.

Just wrong; he was a licensious, lustful, hedonist that "played" at evil through indulging in sinful behavior -- lust, greed, gluttony; and, I think with his daughter he was striving for rage... he was not truly evil, as was Courtly; and, neither were his two compatriots. I don't see any sexual tension between father/daughter, implied or otherwise... sorry.

He was certainly way too controlling of her. I thought he was a control freak who wanted to have power over every aspect of his daughter and wife's lives just to show how strong and masculine he thought he was. I always assumed he was worried that if Alice and Paul spent too much time together, one would either intentionally or unintentionally stumble onto some clue their fathers were leading double lives. Like if they got to talking and one them mentioned something in passing so they realized their fathers weren't where they said they were on a certain date or something like that.

Your theory makes sense, too. He very well could've been jealous of her giving attention to a man other than him. I would've never thought of that possibility had I not read your post but it is certainly interesting.

reply

It's not your imagination, that was definetly implied that he was lusting after his own daughter. He told her boyfriend he didn't have to do anything to offend him except show attention to his daughter.

reply

Yeah he's definitely getting rapey thoughts in the "whip" scene. He even looks down at her breasts before she breaks free and runs. And having gotten beaten to death with a shovel he learned the hard way that Alice didn't "dig" it.
