Beware - R2 DVD is cropped version

The R2 & 4 DVD has been cropped from 2.35 to 1.78.

In some of the dance numbers it goes to 'widescreen' ie 2.35.

The strangest bit is in the 'cry at weddings' number, where it's all 1.78 but changes to 2.35 during the 'black and white' freezes - that makes no sense at all, and you lose the original effect of an immediate freeze/change to b&w.

Is the region 1 dvd the proper ratio of 2.35. throughout the duraration of the film? My region 4 disc opens in 2.35. and then changes to 1.85. after opening credits and ocassionaly goes back to 2.35. during the musical #'s.

Maybe thats the way the film played at cinemas, 1.85 represents the real world and the dance numbers in 2.35 represent a fantasy/heightened reality.

Watching it on Instant Viewing on Netflix here in the States. It is the version that switches aspect ratios and is driving me crazy.

What were they thinking?

I have this on VHS, and I absolutely cringe when they switch from letterbox to fullscreen. At least they had the good sense to leave the dance numbers intact, but they should have employed that logic to the whole film. I can't believe people not only used to tolerate cropped films but actually preferred them – at last many people did.
