Obviously you were not paying too close attention.
The acting was amazing. I mean come on it is Rex Harrison and Richard Burton.
The repetition of lines said by Charlie was supposed to be a part of his character. Harry even pointed it out saying that he does that because he thinks of himself so highly that he believes everything he says deserves an encore.
Harry was not abusive to his mother. He took care of her. He did for her what she needed. And he obviously loved her. I'm sure that it is hard for a son to take care of a mother who's mind is almost completely gone. I don't see how he is ever abusive.
I thought that it was actually a pretty good portrayal of gay people. For the time at least. I thought it was a great portrayal of gay people as just people. Not as crazed psychopaths or just silly jokes. I mean of course their were jokes in this movie it is a comedy. But the jokes were not on gay people. To me it was really just showing an old married couple. And you don't really focus on the fact that they are gay. They are just two people that have been together for many many years so there are problems, but they are still there for each other and care about each other. Which to me is a good thing because maybe it will help other people see gay people as normal people. And it also showed another side of gay people. Like the fact that Charlie brought home that young blond trick. It isn't how it is for all gay couples, but for many it is. Many don't have a monogamous relationship. I thought that it was good to show that because it didn't sugar coat anything.
And as for the wrap they clearly stated several times that Harry wore it because he was embarrassed about the fact that he had lost all his hair. I don't know how you missed that.
Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but when criticizing a movie don't leave out facts just because you weren't paying attention close enough to get them.
I don't agree with your idea that it was a good portrayal of gay people .
Ok , it's 1969 - that was the year the Stonewall riots broke out and gay people weren't all fems and sissies or drag queens. Burton and Harrisons' performances are the stereotypical Hollywood act like a fem sissy type portrayals. They couldnt face the fact that gay men can be even more masculine than some straight men. The movie is terrible
