Well regarding the Network Home Video double DVD Region 2 release of the 2 Bulldog Drummond films of the mid 1960's, DEADLIER THAN THE MALE & SOME GIRLS DO, the first one is correctly letterboxed, because it was shot in 2.35:1 Totalscope(the European version of Cinemascope) but the second one was not shot in Totalscope nor Panavision, but in regular 35mm screen ratio(1.33:1) and that why the opening credits sequence of SOME GIRLS DO are slightly letterboxed because of the titles, but is projected fullscreen for the rest of the film. At least both films are currently available on DVD, at least in Europe anyhow.(Only the first film is available on DVD here in the US thru Hen's Tooth Home Video.)

Thanks for the interesting reply, alanbobet!
I still don't understand why they didn't letterbox the whole "Some Girls Do" as they did in the beginning of the film. I was still very glad to find the film on dvd as it is such a cool late sixties film!!!!

The end is the best with all the femmebots running around the hotel (head quaters of the villain)! When the machines explodes you can see Baba Loncar hopping away from the fireworks. No stunt people there!

I agree with you completely about the film, but I guess that Network Home Video decided that since SOME GIRLS DO was filmed in regular 1.33.1 ratio, that it wasn't worth it to put it in widescreen mode except for the titles, unlike DEADLIER THAN THE MALE which was shot in Panavision like Totalscope. Like yourself, I don't agree but at least we have the film on DVD and both films look gorgeous, especially with the girls in them!

You're right. I'm happy to see the film again. I only had half a film recorded on the vcr before. I love Dalilah Lavi humorous villain. Why did she not become a bigger star?

My guess is that during the 1950's and especially the 1960's, a lot of European actresses became popular in the US cinema, such as Brigitte Bardot, Gina Lollobrigida, Sophia Loren, Claudia Cardinale, Sylva Koscina, Catherine Denueve, Elke Sommer,Franciose Dorleac, especially during the spy movie craze, but when the 70's came, audience's moviegoing tastes changed and the majority of these actresses retired from the cinema or made films in their native countries. In the case of Ms. Lavi, she retired from films after making the western CATLOW in 1971 with Yul Brynner and persued her career as a singer especially in Germany and Isreal, which she is most known today. If you check You Tube under her name, you can find recent videos of interviews with Ms. Lavi and even her music videos. She still look anazingly beautiful even in her 60's! Her CDs are available on EBAY under her name.

Thanks for the info!!
I'm glad she's still around and has a career!
She was a good comedienne. I liked her in Casino Royale.

reply

Yes. I certainly loved Ms. Lavi's performances in both CASINO ROYALE and THE SILENCERS. By the way, I'll have the singular opportunity to meet Bulldog Drumond himself, Richard Johnson who will be in person at the Chiller Theater Convention at the Hilton Parsipany, Parsipany, New Jersey, USA on April 17, 18 and 19, 2009 and maybe he'll autograph my DVD of DEADLIER THAN THE MALE/SOME GIRLS DO or the two paperbacks of both films that I have.
