I wanted a more insidious ending than the one we got

Somehow I wanted the woman to "twist the knife," so to speak. She had already 'stabbed' him once and messed up his life, so in the end, I was kinda' hoping that she would ditch him in the snow-bound cabin and go back to that hotel, retrieve the remaining money he'd stashed in the hole in the wall, thumb her nose at him as he lay dying of rat-poisoned broth, and run off to... Tahiti? to start life anew, maybe to perform the same dastardly deeds on the next gullible sucker. But nooooo, we get the equivalent of matrimonial sponge cake with meringue frosting on top. I mean, come on, the guy was just another sucker getting fleeced. Why spoil the fun?

Ah, but, see, that's the thing...the film took it in a completely different direction than the one we were expecting. But did it? By falling in love, and staying with him, she's actually screwing him over so much more than by just "twisting the knife" and killing him outright. It's brilliant, if you think about it, and just a brilliant film, overall. I came in thinking this was gonna be in the vein of La Chamade (which I saw last week, and loved; the cover art for both were similar), and was blown away by what unfolded on screen. The twists, the turns...just awesome. And what can you say about Deneuve? I've already seen her in four films (Belle du Jour, Repulsion, La Chamade and Mermaid), and fall in love with her a little more each time. We can rag on all the men in those movies that dared to love her and got royally screwed, but would I--would we--do otherwise?

Have you read Waltz Into Darkness, from which the film was adapted?
Completely different ending

I find the ending kind of insidious as is. Talk about a rotten relationship!
