Why doesn't JPB's character go after... (spoiler)

... the character of Richard? I kept waiting for this to come up as a possibility, once he heard Marion's true story, but it never did. I mean, losing nearly $28 million and being willing to give it all up without a fight?

Speaking of which, while I understand his reluctance to be open and honest with the private investigator (given his wife's involvement as an accomplice in murder), I still kept wishing he could somehow divert the PI's attention towards Richard-the-con-man. Now THAT was someone worthy of tracking down!

It would have been impossible for him to have gone after Richard without implicating Marion. Particularly given that Richard was already in jail because of another offence. So he might, at an outside chance, have got the 28 million (francs, surely, hence worth about $5m in those days) but he would have lost the girl. Which is kind of the point of the film really.

I used to want to change the world. Now I just want to leave the room with a little dignity.

I htink it simply did not occur to him since Richarerd ws in jail. Not much more thought than that went into the question of the OP.
