Anyone else prefer the electronic synth score to the jazzy one?

I grew up with the synth version when the movie was shown twice on Channel 5 in the UK in the late 1990s with this theme. I have the MGM DVD with the original Whittaker score and I didn't like this version at all. The music was ill-timed in the scenes whereas the synth version got it right. I'd love to see a version of the movie released on DVD with the synth version put back. There is always the 1980s VHS copies still floating around I suppose...
