The Thing That Always Puzzled Me....(Spoilers)

....and bear in mind I was at school when I watched this...

WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST KILL HIM AND DISPOSE OF THE BODY?

They seem to have had limitless resources (imagine them setting up his fake lifestyle on the Continent, the fake marriage etc), they could have dropped his weighted body into the North Sea, and no-one would have been any the wiser.

Anyway, good film, I'd love to see it released on DVD.

Since I wasn't sure (and I have this on DVD) I watched it and have an answer for you.

They weren't sure if he was working alone or not (they assumed he was investigating them). Some wanted to kill him right off, but the vote of the total committee was to keep him alive, so when he got his memory back, they could find out.

Also they said they were gentlemen and it was'nt the done thing.

He asked them that very question. They replied by saying that his murder was rejected because they believed he had accomplices. It was better to keep him alive, distract him with wealth as long as necessary for them to continue their espionage, and if he ever discovered the truth, then they would detain him and interrogate him to see if there were any others like him or if he was acting alone. They also became aware that he called the Poe Lease which would investigate his disappearance. They were able to bribe his private investigator.

Later, they told him that the murder he witnessed didn't really happen. The gun had blanks although the shooter didn't know that, and neither did Richard. So they prefer not to murder people.
