Did anybody else notice..

..that Hatchet for the Honeymoon was a great inspiration for 'American Psycho' ?? The lead really felt like Patrick Bateman, and even some scenes were kinds copied (the scene in the restaurante, where he tells the girl that he killed, raped and burned her sister, and she thinks it was a joke).. Anyway, it's a great movie!

I agree completely.

The opening monologue was similar to AP
The detective was very similar to Defao's role in AP.
As you said, the scene in the restaurant was very similar.
Plus obviously the overall plot of a man losing his sanity and slaughtering women.
And the character was very very similar, a rich playboy with a dark sense of humor and psychopathic tenancies.

I loved this film, it's up there with Black Sabbath for me.

You had inspired my enthusiasm until that last sentence!

reply

Everything! Right down to the internal monologue while making his toilette.

I had actually come here to pose that very question. The resemblence -influence?- is unmistakeable.

"If you don't know the answer -change the question."

reply

I had to rewind and listen again to the internal monologue because it was so similar. Eerie. Really eerie.

i didn't really see much in common with american psycho but then again i hate american psycho and haven't watched it in years, so i'll just take your word for it. i did see many references to psycho, 1960 which in turn was probably also a huge influence on american psycho. to me, this is mario bava's tribute to alfred hitchcock.

i mean, the guy commits matricide, dresses up as a woman, kills young women to satisfy himself sexually, makes analogies with flies, and talks to himself. exactly like psycho.

there are even many segments which are obvious references to hitchcock's work. like the ‘train scream’ (the lady vanishes), and the peephole section towards the end (psycho).

i didn't think this was very funny in its context (it's very amusing today, just look at stephen forsyth's wardrobe) however psycho clearly contains all of this macabre humor you refer to.

so, yes, hatchet for the honeymoon may have influenced american psycho. but both of these pictures are indebted to psycho!

reply

Not only are they similar, there is a point in the trivia section for American Psycho's IMDb page that says the cast and crew of the film watched Hatchet For The Honeymoon before they shot their movie.

That's actually what brought me to this film.

reply

Absolutely. And also shares many familiar themes and visuals with William Lustig's Maniac.
