i didn't really see much in common with american psycho but then again i hate american psycho and haven't watched it in years, so i'll just take your word for it. i did see many references to psycho, 1960 which in turn was probably also a huge influence on american psycho. to me, this is mario bava's tribute to alfred hitchcock.
i mean, the guy commits matricide, dresses up as a woman, kills young women to satisfy himself sexually, makes analogies with flies, and talks to himself. exactly like psycho.
there are even many segments which are obvious references to hitchcock's work. like the ‘train scream’ (the lady vanishes), and the peephole section towards the end (psycho).
i didn't think this was very funny in its context (it's very amusing today, just look at stephen forsyth's wardrobe) however psycho clearly contains all of this macabre humor you refer to.
so, yes, hatchet for the honeymoon may have influenced american psycho. but both of these pictures are indebted to psycho!
