Great film but heartbreaking

I see no reason for a remake, Travers and McKenna made an amazing team. It's almost too tragic at the end for little kids under nine to watch in my opinion.

I agree - I was devastated by the ending

Yes me too. It just seemed so unnecessary! I was really enjoying the movie and did not see the "devastating" event coming.

Ditto and the reason there need to be reviews as there were back in the day for parents to know movie content before taking kids. I read such a review of The Day of the Dolphin as a kid back when the movie came out and still haven't seen it! I would hate to think of a kid seeing this!

F you Angus, is all I want to say.....damn that was hard to see, I knew it was coming

....and Whitey's on the moon

Sadly, Ring of Bright Water is based on the real life events of Gavin Maxwell and his pet otters. It was heartbreaking enough to see Mij's fate in the movie. It was even more devastating to learn that the real Mij met the same fate in real life.

I was born in '69 and saw this film when less than 10 years old and the ending did traumatise me to the extent that I still remember it to this day.

This film has a UK 'U' certificate which is 4 years old and up - I disagree with certification and would prefer it was a 'PG'.

In reality, Mij died when the author's lover -the poet Kathleen Raine- accidentally let him escape. She blamed herself and saw it as the beginning of the end of their relationship and even the author Gavin Maxwell's eventual death. The otter escaped just after the couple had had a massive row about the author's homosexuality; so in this context, the death of Mij is not only necessary, but deeply entwined in the story of the Maxwell's life.

In the context of a film, it's the antithesis of the Disney happy ending. I too was devastated as a kid when I saw it, but I look back on it now as an important and inevitable lesson to learn. Much like Bambi.

I really liked this movie too, I still have an old VHS copy, heard it is now on DVD but pretty hard to find.
