Duvall's story (spoilers)

I found all the characters engrossing because each had a dual, conflicting nature. I was really moved by Duvall's character, Gordon, when he tells Natalie about the wife that consumed his wife. He said he was going to leave her & that he couldn't stand the sight of her face, but the flashbacks show a man desperate to save her & he kissed her as she lay dying. His words don't coincide with his actions.

Just saw this again. Still find Gordon's flashbacks a masterful part of the film.

When you say he was kissing his wife after the firs, I thought he was giving mouth to mouth to his daughter. I don't think his wife or his son made it out of the flaming building in that flashback.

It's his wife....you can see in the close-up that the woman is older.
