In the first cut of the film, the occupiers were Spanish, but after threats of a boycott from Franco's government, the studio quailed and changed it to a Portuguese colony. (And then the studio "dumped" the film anyway)...
shareI find it pretty amusing that Pontecorvo, the maker of The Battle of Algiers, would twist historical facts just to suit a dictator.
This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.
Which is why we have a British agent bizarrely trying to undermine the rule of Britain's ally Portugal, instead of hostile Spain, and lots of Spanish names and snippets of spoken Spanish in the supposedly Portuguese colony. The rewrite was clearly a bit of a rush job.
