is this a sequel to the 'battle of algiers'?

i read somewhere it was. i read the plot and it seems to have little to do with the algerian war. could someone clarify this for me?

reply

Absolutely not. This was Pontecorvo's "Big budget" film following the success of Battle of Algiers but it has nothing to do with the first film (apart from the fact that Pontecorvo directed. If you have not seen it, check it out. This is probably Marlon Brando's best performance.

reply

Definitely not Brando's best performance.

Apart from the fact that it's the direct chronological sequel, there are numerous echoes, resonances and parallels between the two films, from the overall theme - a people's revolt against (neo)colonial repression (oddly, more 'neo' in the film set in the mid-nineteenth century), through to specific scenes and complexities of character.

No, it's not Algiers II, but it comes from the same region of the auteur's thought, feelings and imagination.

It's more of a spiritual companion. Almost every movie by Pontecorvo dealt with the theme of rebellion.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

i think it has a lot of similarities, but i know that its not a sequel to battle of algiers even though they do touch on similar themes at times.

for me there is no indication that this is a direct sequel though.

You could argue it is a prequel in the sense that it gives an unsentimental look at the string pulling and what was at stake in European colonial ventures.
