Love is like a red red rose.

Was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the song that is played while Maggie Smith walks up the stairs after just being fired. I find it very beautiful but not mentioned in the end credits. Wondering if anyone knows where I can find it.

It is on the soundtrack album and was (i believe) written by Rod Mckuen (he did all the music for the film). You can probably find it on e-bay. I bought the album in a 2nd hand store and love it. That`s a great song and a great moment in a great film.

hope that helps!!

I bought TWO soundtrack albums on ebay. One had no song on it at all, and the other is sung by Rod, okay, but not like in the film. Still looking for classic performance with singal piano accompaniment????

I haven't seen the film in a while but if you mean "My love is like a red red rose" you have wonderful (Scottish ?):-) taste. It is a poem by Scotland's most revered poet of all time, Robert Burns and is, as you say, very beautiful. I'm not sure where the music came from but Burns was quite open about his use and adaptation of folk airs, which he acquired while traveling around the Scottish countryside for inspiration.

As I recall, the song is quite difficult to perform and challenging even for the best singers. It was one of my father's favorites and his preferred rendition, emm, many, many years ago, was by a well known Scottish singer of the time called Kenneth McKellar. Not sure what you can find in the way of recorded performances now but the song is adaptable to several styles and the best, IMO, is in classical form with a single piano as accompaniment. A search at Google should turn up something - good luck.

Was wondering if Kenneth McKeller performed it in the film. My soundtrack version is not the same as the film, good, but not like the film version. Still hunting.

No. Gordon Jackson sang it himself. It is, as someone else said earlier in the thread, a tradional Scottish air. In the 1960 film, JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, Pat Boone also sings it to Diane Baker.
