Questions regarding the pigs...

In most reviews, they mention that the young man is "romantically involved with pigs". Something that also struck my mind at various occasions, but I thought the film never made that clear and rather seemed to mean that the man would rather spend time with pigs than with persons.

So, did he actually sleep with pigs or...
