Was I the only one in tears?

I saw this movie the first time about a week ago on TCM and I thought it was touching.I cried several times during the movie and even after thinking about it. I wish they had movies like this in the movies nowadays.....just for a change.

I grew up watching this movie and nope, you're not the only one who weeps everytime. :)

I saw this as a kid and was teary eyed too... Until my dad told me that he was in a situation like that but chose to work double shifts and go to night school and eventually get his PHD rather than give us up on a boat.. Then we both called Popi a lazy bastard.. LOL True Story

reply

That shows a lack of empathy for people who are NOT you.

As far as seeing movies like this, in the sense of originality, quality, and emotional depth, sorry, but nothing today comes close. The 1960s was an era when things mattered: movies, music, etc. Now only money does.

Play the game existence 'til the end...of the beginning...

That's just not true. For my era, that would be the 1970s, there is The Bad News Bears (I was exactly those kids age). Earlier in the decade there is Bless The Beast And The Children. I'm sure there are more examples. Popi, for sure, is very touching and with a gentle comedic touch to it.

"You know, my name..."

It probably can't be nailed down to a single decade. I was born in the mid 60s and I often marvel today at the lack of depth/complexity of today's media vs "back then", which includes the 70s. It probably did end sometime in the 80s. That's when the obsession to accumulate money and material things became mainstream.

IMO it ended when Thatcher and Reagan were elected. The boomers dropped their masks of altruism and showed their true colours: pure self interest and greed.

reply

No. I cried when he sent them off in the boat. That was good acting!

Love me some Waltons
