Questions

I did not get the movie on several points, Just what happened between Schneider and Ronet's characters in the past. Why would she not talk to Delon about it if it was nothing, Just what did the father pick up on between his daughter and Delon because there was not much. Why did Ronet simply go to the other side of the pool and get out. And why did Delon really want him dead.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marrianne Schneider and Harry (Roney) did have a relationship in the past, Penelope (Birkin) Commented to Jean Paul (Delon) that he turn her over to him but could have Marrianne back if he wanted to!!! You kind of got the feeling that Harry still fancied Schneider especially when they were dancing together!!! On the Delon and Bikin scene when they arrived back from swimming just in time for dinner Birkin's chatactor got the hump and left the table in a huff!!! Harry went to see what was wrong with her and she probably told him what went on and that Delon slept with her!!! Given the way she spoke about Harry when she found Delon in the bedroom I wondered how much she liked her Father as to me she seemed not to like Harry very much!!! At times in the film you kind of got the feeling that Delon and Ronet charactors kind of competed with each other especially in the swimming race scene!!! Given Birkins comments about what Harry thought of him and the rivalry between the two male charactors I think Delon's charactor finally snapped!!! I always wondered why Harry didn't use the steps to get out of the pool though he had been drinking quite a bit in town before he came back to the villa and hit the gate!!!

I think the movie La Piscine is the kind of movie that gives you hints but leaves you the viewer to join up the dots or put two and two together!!! This is my take on the film I hope my answers help you!!!;-)

@ amanda317...Would he have gotten Marrianne back because Harry could not stay in one place for long or he just wanted sex from her and no relationship? [on what made him snap] I think Harry kept going after his wife in a bravado manner, plus he fell for his daughter and did not like his treatment of her and her mother along with his wife not telling him about her past with Harry. [By the way was Harry leaving her mother or him not spending any time with her the reason she seemed distant to her father] He seemed conflicted between jealousy and his feelings for both women. And Harry was in the way. Did you get the feeling Delon and Marrianne made it after all what happened? That was my take on these matters after seeing the film again.....Am I right? I really like Delon and Schneider, do you know of any other film where they star in.

Hi, on the Lions Gate version I saw which had British subtitles I think Harry just got a girl he was seeing pregnant and the relationship broke down!!! He some how managed to track the woman down and met his daughter Penelope!!! From then on he saw her every chance he got and asked her to go away with him all the time!!! I think happened only when she was 17 or 18 so Pen the daughter didn't know him for long!!! I think some of her comments in the film indicated she manipulated Delon's charactor and partly this caused him to snap!!!

Harry to me seemed a bit of a charmer with women and I think he would have used his charm to get Marrianne back!!! Jean Paul (Delon) seemed a depressive type and it emerged in the that he had tried to commit suicide once!!! I think Harry may also have used this to try to get her back by saying something like why do you put up with that guy when you could have me!!! I an a successful record company owner and I think I have more going for me!!! I jind of got the feeling though that Harry treated women badly and went from one to the other very quicky and didn't seem the settling down type!!! If he had of got back together with Marrianne I think it would only have been a little for love but it would have been more to get one over on his main raval Jean Paul, but in the end Jean Paul got the better of Harry by getting close with his daughter!!! I think J.P. did sleep with his daughter as in the scene where he says he is leaving in the morning before he goes out!!! He says Penelope is coming with him or her Mother will his eyes out!!! I kind of got the feeling that Harry even fanced his daughter as there wast a scene when he told her that she was just the daughter he wanted and said she had nice skin ETC to me this seemed like not your average Father and Daughter relationship though I could be wrong.

Yes I think Delon and Schneider's did stay together in the end as they both cuddled!!! Though I did wonder if they ever did split up would she have told the police what she knew!!! Or would have J.P. have lost it again with her!!!

Alain Delon and Romy Schneider have also starred together in Christine (1958 which was a period drama like Dangerous liaisons!!! He plays a soldier and she plays the daughter of a musican/composor!!! They also did The assination of Trotsky (1973). I think Christine might be hard to get hold of though!!!;-) I hope my answers help you!!!;-)

Best regards,

Amanda!!!;-)Xxx

@ Amanda317...Indeed it does help me. I saw this actress in a movie called dirty hands with Rod Stieger and found her to be very good and in my eyes what a movie star should be and became interested in seeing her in more films. I found this film by accident and loved her performance in it. after looking her up I came to find out she and Delon were married, so i guess that is why they had such good chemistry. I will watch the films you have suggested. and thanks for taking time to respond to my post.

...I came to find out she and Delon were married...

Romy Schneider and Alain Delon were never married. They were engaged for a few years in the early '60s, but he left her to marry his first wife, Nathalie.

I personally don't think the daughter manipula t ed Delon. I think it's obvious that Romy was flirting with Harry. Both Alain and Penelope noticed this. Even Harry thought he was making heads way with Romy because she indulged him and even allowed him to feel her up that night. He was surprised that she was serious about Delon despite her leading him on. I do think that both Delon and Penelope were attracted to each other from the start but I don't think Delon would've acted on it if he didn't become so jealous and paranoid about what was going on between Romy and Harry.

I also agree in that I think Harry was attracted to his own daughter and she was weirded out by him.

These are my takes to you questions:

What happened between Harry and Romy's character was the past, and happened before she ever met Jean-Paul. She was right not to get into the details if she and JP were going to have a healthy relationship. Guys don't want to think about times that you were with another man, details would cause an unnecessary preoccupation. I have to admit, though, that a lot of what she did in the movie seemed a bit more than I would put a guy through who I was dating seriously. But that is the reason I found this movie to be so good-each of the four main characters are flawed in their on unique way.

The father put two and two together over dinner and the way Pen and JP looked and behaved. It was also kind of obvious from other subtle clues, like when JP was asked which beach they went to, and it turns out they went to one that was farther away than necessary. The daughter was manipulating JP to get back at her estranged father. If you'll remember her confessional to JP, she explained that she didn't even know her father was alive until just recently, and she resented the fact that he was only taking her all over the place to boost his ego because so many people assumed that she was his much younger mistress, even after his loud protestations otherwise. Harry struck me as a guy who was suffering terribly from a midlife crisis and an inferiority complex. He saw how well JP was doing with his former flame, that he quit drinking despite his recent professional setback, wasn't even going in to St. Tropez because he was content with the arrangement at the villa, etc. Add the flashy sports car, the carloads of hangers-on, the parading of his new "hit" single (do you see how that might have been taken by someone whose most recent work turned out to be a flop?) and then his comment by the pool to JP that he was "always" higher up than JP, and you can better get a feel for the many nuances that this film assembles. That would be my answer about why he wanted to kill Harry.

Why he didn't just go to the other side of the pool - if you'll recall, initially he was demanding assistance from JP, and JP would act like he was but then pushed or flipped him back in. Initially, he in his intoxicated state probably didn't know how serious the situation was. As he continues to get shoved back in, he is starting to realize that he had better just try to get out on his own, and he does swim away a bit and go to a different side of the pool, but by that time, JP has come around again. He was also physically impaired from being tired (he was out partying, boozing, dancing until 4am.) and he was already pitching around in the pool for some time.

Do you feel they put it behind them, I felt she may have went to far with the other guy and understood, even though initially angry I felt they worked it out.

reply

Actually, I don't think they worked it out. She mentioned toward the end, when she refused to leave with him, that she didn't really believe she knew who he was anymore. I don't think most sane women would continue a relationship with someone who murdered someone she had once cared for and was still friendly with. That's a bit much to expect someone to overlook or forgive. If he could do it to Harry, he could do it to her too.
