Words win over numbers...

File this under "stupid post time" and I'm sure someone has already thought of this, but wouldn't "Words" have won over "Numbers" because you can spell "One plus one equals two" and thereby do math with words, but you can't do vice versa?

I'm probably going to get slammed for this, but it just suddenly hit me and I had to post it.

Au contraire mon ami...

Words are darn near useless. First, unlike numbers, words tend to be vague. You can't confuse 1 and 2 the way you could, "love" and "like".

Second, words carry emotional baggage that clouds reason. There are many words you cannot use in certain situations because they make people angry or sad. I can recite a list of numbers anywhere I choose without fear of censorship (unless I recite them so loudly it annoys people).

Third, words assume a common language. I may have the greatest message in the world, but if I only speak a language that no one else does it is worthless. The base 10, Arabic numeral system is far closer to universal than any language ever was.

And as far as communicating goes, computers communicate just fine using two numbers, 0 and 1.

In the words versus numbers debate, my vote goes squarely with the numbers
