One of the greatest in Cinema passed away...

He was (and remains) my 2nd favorite director.

In his memory I'm reposting this (already vanished) thread from FG board.

Please rate the films you've seen (out of 10, or 4-stars system, or 'from best to worst'), post/add your comments, recommendations, etc. ANY feedback very welcome and much appreciated. Thanks for your participation.

P.P.S. - This is actually a repost from FG board (deleted some time ago) and I apologize to all who already participated there. It would be really nice, if you could repeat the exercise here, in humble hope that this thread will 'live' a little longer. Thank you for your understanding.

It is very hard for me to imagine that Bergman is gone. He has been out there doing what he loved doing all of my life. I first discovered him through his film The Magician. At the time I have to admit that I did not realize who he was or how important he was to film as an art form. I t was years later when I discovered The Seventh Seal that I was mature enough to realize that there was something more to film than just being entertained. He provoked emotions from me and made me think about film as art. I have embarrassingly only seen a small amount of his films. Not one that I saw disappointed me.

But I truly feel he is still alive in each of us who loved his films. I look at the list and I see a man’s life before me. What a legacy he has left. He has personally left the gift of more films to be discovered by me. I know I will continue to experience his vision for years to come as I am able to see more of his legacy.

I can’t at this time rate a part of his life. Each film stands on its own and only represents a small step in his journey in film. I can only rate the man himself from what I have seen on my journey. He will always be a ten as far as I am concerned. The world has lost someone special and I know he has left many of us who have enjoyed his work the responsibility to make sure he is not forgotten.

Fanny och Alexander (Fanny and Alexander, 1982) 7.5/10 *film version. I hear the miniseries is way better.

I wanted to stop by here... as I am still gathering my thoughts, or utterly at a loss for words, for something to write about Bergman (and Antonioni) you know where, this seems like a nice starting point to reflect, and I thank you for creating this little place to reminisce with like minds. *joins the circle of admirers; gets comfortable*

Saraband (2003, TV) 7/10 maybe that's the right rating, maybe not. I saw it too early in my film- and Bergman watching, and right on the heels of Scenes From a Marriage (10/10 and instantly in my top 20!) to appreciate it in its own right, for any simple beauty there may be in it. It will be important for me to revisit this one day, whether or not the rating changes... Liv, Erland, and Ingmar's last film...
Scener ur ett äktenskap (Scenes from a Marriage, 1973) 10/10 (5-hour version) If I had to narrow down to, say, ten the most searing, emotional, human experiences I've ever had while engaged in a film -- you know well enough how difficult that could be for me -- this film would always, easily take a spot.
Viskningar och rop (Cries and Whispers, 1972) 10/10 and so would this one. This film kills me. This film alone deserves a heartfelt tribute from me. Even if Ingmar had only given me this film, he'd still have given me so much...
Persona (1966) 9.5/10, which a second viewing might confirm as a 10. I'm sure you remember that strange bit of distance that lingers between me and it... Ah, I wish for you to see this.

Såsom i en spegel (Through a Glass Darkly, 1961) 9/10 the trilogy could go in any order any day, definite top 5 Bergman and really... all just as easily perfect 10s. I might rate Bergman by a different standard.

So much left in front of me... but even after I've seen every Bergman film I can find, I'll never be 'done' with him. He'll never stop showing me new things, new ways of seeing the world, others, myself... Oh, thanks, Ingmar...

I suppose three whole 9's isn't bad for a director i'll bag at every opportunity. However, i still think he's over-rated and his films were mostly pretty didactic and repetitive, two traits which suffocated his obvious talent too many times.

I have no idea what any of your post means. Especially the end of the sill "whatever" comments. How old are you? You can't really disagree with someone's ratings as it's all about personal experience and it's all subjective. You could however start a conversation by asking why i might harshly rate a film you regard so highly and then we can have a mature interaction. But something tells me you're not capable of that and to be fair you're not really in a position to make the claim that Bergman never made a film that bad as you've seen about 7 of his 35-odd pics.

That's none of your business. That's very typical to ask someone their age on this site when someone wants to insult others...

I understand that film is a subjective art form and not everyone is going to agree on everything, but that's what IMDb is for(even if you don't necessarily agree with someone else's opinion). I cannot fathom how you could give such a highly regarded film such a low rating, but that's your opinion and I have every right to disagree with you.

You're able to judge someone's maturity level by just two posts? How pretentious of you. I'm FULLY "capable" of having a "mature interaction". I never give up on a good argument on this site.

You're not in the position to claim I have seen "7 of his 35-odd pics". Those 7 were fresh in my memory... I have almost all of his films in my collection.

P.S. Bergman was one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.

You cannot fathom because you never asked. If you want to come to IMDB to discuss film, then do that and do just make attacking comments about someone elses rating of a film. Open a conversation about it by asking some questions. It's hilarious how many kids there are around here who are incapable of conversing maturely. Maybe that's the reason you hang out on the internet all day instead of having a social life.

I must mention that I haven't seen Sawdust and Tinsel, Smiles of a summer night or Saraband so I can't score them.

I'd also like to mention that it's time more Bergman fans saw Hets or Torment as it is known. It was only actually written by Bergman but directed by Victor Sjostrom the aging star of wild strawberries. He was also a wildly talented director but more noirish and expressionistic than bergman. The combination works brilliantly in hets and all of bergman's usual preoccupations are covered. It's harsh to sjostrom's genius to add his work to Bergman's canon but it just might expose more of his films to the world.

Except for 2 of his earlier films, I have all of Bergman's films, and provide this rating based on the number of times I've, without consciously planning, returned to see them again.

1. SILENCE (B's most multi-layered film, can be viewed literally, or thru psychological or philosophical symbols. Can even be viewed as a comedy).
2. SAWDUST AND TINSEL/NAKED NIGHT (B's first "serious" international masterpiece).
3. CRIES AND WHISPERS (Penetrating, different acting styles by female leads).
4. WILD STRAWBERRIES (B's best "conventiional" film).
5. LESSON IN LOVE (Best Bergman comedy).
6. SEVENTH SEAL (B's best-known film).
7. THREE STRANGE LOVES (B's best early film dealing with problems of women),
8. SHIP TO INDIA (B's best early film dealing with problems of men).
9. SCENES FROM A MARRAIGE (B's best later film dealing with problems of men and women).
10. HOUR OF THE WOLF (B's strangest film, difficult to determine IF I like it, and how it "fits" into his oevure).
