TCM shows soft-core porn

I don't mind but it makes me wonder if someone of their core audience (older people) might wake up from falling asleep watching TV and seeing this. Might be a shock the old heart!!!

reply

LOL Remember it WAS on at like 2am. I don't think it would shock older people. This film was so dull and drawn out it might put them back to sleep again:)

reply

I would imagine that most of the older people, as you refer to them, if they woke up and saw porn, soft or otherwise, on their television would probably think, hey, I must have died in my sleep and woken up in heaven, and it looks cosy, like my front room, and hey, all that Christian rhetoric really was crap after all - they've got porn on TV !!!

But compared to the "torture-porn" films being made today this is extremely tame stuff. I'd think the old folks might get a kick out of the beatnik dialogue and seeing James "Gidget" Darren playing a drugged-out trumpeter.

reply

I don't know, this has sex scenes, but it's far from being porn. What, was this in TCM Underground? That's an attempt to draw in a younger audience, at a time slot when few older viewers are awake.

reply

Most of those "older people" would have been James Darren's contemporaries. Porn didn't start with this generation!

It's a crime to call "Venus In Furs" porn. If TCM is showing it then it means that they recognize it as art, as many people do. As far as the sex goes, there is actually very little of it in this seminal euro/arthouse film.

you and I are the only ones on IMDB who like this film, Sultan.

Here's a good review:

I've just watched.

I like it too. It's now one of my fave Franco films.

So that's 3.

Great! Welcome to the "Three People like Franco" film club here on imdb.com. ;]

All kidding aside, there are many people who view this film in a positive light and if you google "Franco, Venus in Furs" you can find a lot of other websites with either DVD reviews or Franco-phile message boards. It's a shame none of those people seem to come here.

reply

Make it 4, I love Franco. I think this is one of his stronger films, Maria Rohm was great in this. Underrated actress and a great beauty!

reply

I agree. I think the Harry Alan Towers-produced ones are the strongest. Some of the stuff he did in the '70s are just plain weird - and not in a good way.

reply

I like Jess Franco movies too. Obviously, he's one of the most hit-or-miss directors imaginable, but when he's at his best, his stuff is pretty terrific.

Uh, my name is Johnny Wish-Wishbone. Johnny Wishbone.

reply

I like Franco's films.

Add me to the list.

I would not say I by any means loved this film, but it does have some things going for it. The music wasn't half bad, the acting was decent, Klaus Kinski is a God, the girl was hot and had a good body and was worth watching, and it was a beautiful looking film. I liked the first part, got bored during the middle, thought it might go somewhere right at the end and they copped out with the lack of ending. By the way, I saw a 35mm print of it tonight and it was absolutely gorgeous! If the plot were only a bit better and it had some other ending, I might have loved this film.
