Was this meant to be such a joke?

I don't think they even tried to make this a Bond movie. Lazenby's delivery was so poor, the fight scenes at the start were so sped up it looked like a Benny Hill comedy and the whole thing just reaks of amateur effort. I am glad Lazenby did not stick around for more Bond films, Moore was the perfect choice in the 70s.

Interesting statement, as this was the last of the films that were pretty much based on the actual book by Fleming.

I actually reckon Lazenby did a good job, as did Moore for his first few, before he got too old.

And yet its execution was so poor that this film was the result...pretty interesting.

Are you saying the making of the film was so poor that this film is the result? That's pretty interesting too.

reply

Yeah they spent $22,000,000 in 1969 as a joke.

OHMSS is often cited as the best Bond movie & is at the very least one of the best of the franchise.

Lazenby, Dalton & Craig ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES!

They could easily be put in any 2014 movie and people wouldn't recognize they were shot 45 years ago. If there's anything bad about IHMSS, the action scenes are definitely not it.

So does the fight scenes in Thunderball constitute a joke as well? The chair that Bond slides at Bouval is clearly spead up.
As is the entire final fight scene on the bridge of the Disco Volante.

The only part that was clearly over cranked is the DBS zipping up the beach to the Cougar. Its more like choppy editing to make it more exciting. The odd part is considering Hunt (the Director), was an editor it's odd some of the editing being sloppy.

The sound of the car's tires screeching on the SAND was hilarious!

Yes.
