Something i don't understand

In You only live twice Blofeld met Bond face to face and in this film he acts like he has never seen him before what's up with that ?

reply

But this was a different Blofeld and Bond in this film from You Only Live Twice

reply

maybe he did know he was just acting like he didn't. that's my take

See the trivia section. They stayed so faithful to the book (written before You Only Live Twice) that for some reason it was shot as if they were meeting for the first time.

It's a bit odd, and it doesn't seem like it would be a big thing to correct.

The continuity goes right out of the window because Ian Fleming's 'Blofeld trilogy' of novels was filmed in the wrong order (and with only two of the screenplays actually adapting the literary stories!)...

And after this, Diamonds Are Forever opens in Japan (briefly) and soon has Moneypenny – last seen crying at Bond's wedding in this film – joking with him about getting an engagement ring for her, unthinkable given his appalling bereavement. It's like this film treats the previous one as not having happened, then Diamonds reinstates YOLT and pretends this one didn't happen!

... because I reappear with tedious inevitability

Your username is awesome, btw. Love Drax and Moonraker is criminally underrated.

There are a few possible suggestions to overcome this continuity error... Bond had plastic surgery to alter his appearance (this was originally going to happen to explain the change in actors playing Bond but was ultimately dropped)... or that Bond's disguise was more elaborate than what was depicted. There are also Bond fans who subscribe to the "Bond as codename theory" which would also explain why Blofeld doesn't recognize this "new" Bond.

It's definitely a glowing error as why would Bond even decide to try and meet him face to face in the first place knowing he would recognize him. Being a different actor he's still the same character even showing items in his drawer from the past movies.

reply

Well, Blofeld is supposed to be this master of disguise. In the next film, Diamonds, he goes to great lengths to look different and have clones. It's easy to say that here, Blofeld could just be a clone, or it could be that the 007 number really is just that, a number, and Blofeld finally gets word in a bit after Bond shows up that it's him.

Bond is in disguise! Like Superman, all you need is a pair of glasses change your voice and no one will recognize you. They were simpler times.

reply

They were staying faithful to the book, which of course makes no sense given the previous films. had they decided in the first place to film the books in order and have some kind of continuity of plot, it would have made more sense.

reply

Blofeld instantly recognizes Bond...but pretends he doesn't in order to string him along...buying him time to discover what Bond is up to and what his organization knows. That's how I justify it.

The unholy triumvirate:
The Bat, the Trek, the Bond

If you watch Diamonds are Forever before OHMSS, the continuity makes a bit more sense. Bond is still in Japan at the start of DAF. Like he was in YOLT.

And Blofeld is still wearing his neck brace from the end of OHMSS at the beginning of FYEO.

Watch the films in this order: YOLT> DAF> OHMSS> FYEO.

It also conflicts with FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. If Bond was his main target in that movie it seems implausible that Blofeld would be ignorant of what he looked like. There was even a guy running around in a training simulation wearing a perfect Bond mask for God's sake.

I works fine as a sequel to THUNDERBALL though, since that's what it was originally designed to be.
