Similarities to the recent Brett Favre circus.

Washed up quarterback being badgered by the media about when he is going to retire. Sounds familiar. I hope Brett has a great run with the Jets and proves them all wrong.

A poor choice of words on my part. I should have said "Thought to be washed up". Packer fans like me wish nothing but the best for Favre and the Jets. The more and better Brett pays, the better our draft pick gets.

"...Heston's QB character gets killed on the field at the end when he is sacked by 5 defensive linemen."

Uhh...not killed, but hurt -- probably ending his career.

The final image of Heston down on the field was meant to recall a famous game photo of veteran New York Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle on his knees on the field, helmetless, with blood streaming down his face after a particularly vicious sack. The photo has become iconic -- "the picture of defeat" -- representing the end of the line for an aging athlete.

Zriter59 As a cheesehead, I've followed and admired Favre over many years. Seeing "Number One" again today (for the fourth time over 35 years), however, I couldn't help but think of Brett. Especially during the scene when Ron tells his wife that "I'm the best in the world" and she asks whether he STILL is.

A couple months ago, I saw an interview re. Favre with John Elway, an intelligent man who was a damn good NFL quarterback. Elway noted that Favre might very well be the best quarterback of all time; AND when one has been the all-time best in his field, it's very, very hard to retire.

That contemporary resonance made my most recent viewing of "Number One" all the more moving.
