Heston's throwing...my goodness!

Could they not have gotten someone (Johnny Unitas?) to give him a few pointers on how to look authentic when chucking a football? It reminds me of the MASH episode where Frank Burns throws a baseball.

I hear ya'. As a former high school football player and college baseball pitcher, it always drives me nuts to see a sports movie where the guy's throwing form and technique both suck. I love Charlton heston, but cringed watching him throw.

I think it was supposed to match Billy Kilmer who was with the Saints at the time and who also didn't have the cleanest throws...
Heston mentions this in "The Actor's Life" book.

Agreed....will never forget my horror and revulsion. Unitas would have been useful!

Supposedly they did hire a real quarterback to coach Heston on how to throw, the problem more than anything was that by the time the film was made Chuck was just too old to do these things convincingly (which may have been the whole point).

It's like Don Johnson playing a pro golfer in Tin Cup. The only guy who could swing a club was Danny Noonan (MOKeefe) from CADDYSHACK. Same thing occurred here. Making actors seem like pro athletes is almost as complicated as making them seem like real musicians if they are not.
