DVD commentary

Just in case anyone out there has the Marlon Brando DVD collection (which includes The Appaloosa, The Night of the Following Day, A Countess From Hong Kong, and The Ugly American), listen to the DVD commentary of the director of Night of the Following Day! You would not believe the insanity that went on behind the scenes of the making of this film.

I just watched it with the commentary - and all I really did was sit frozen in disbelief with my jaw dropped for 90 minutes. I had heard of Brando's puerile and uncooperative behavior on "The Score," and other films, but none of the stories touched what poor Hubert Cornfield had to experience with the madman while trying to make this picture...I think someone should make a film about the making of this film. Philip Seymour Hoffman could play Brando. Gary Oldman could play Cornfield. It would be hilarious.

It didn't surprise me at all actually. Brando became known for doing stuff like this. There was always a method to Brando's madness though. Even Cornfield has a huge amount of respect for Brando's talent.

Go to youtube and watch the interview that Connie Chung did with Brando. It sums up a lot about his attitude towards life and acting. The man, like him or not, was a true genius.

I do think it's a matter of time before someone makes a film about Brando's life. I mean, how could you pass that up?? It would be an incredible picture if done properly. I'm thinking Johnny Depp playing Brando personally.

reply

Tell some of the stories, Im too cheep to buy the boxset.

reply

Does anyone know if the DVD that is released individually also has the commentary?

reply

I just got the individual one and it says in a big table on the DVD case COMMENTARY BY DIRECTOR HUBERT CORNFIELD and it's flat out not on the disc. I was very pissed. I love the film, but come on. That's crap. The picture is pretty good however.

When I watched HEARTS OF DARKNESS the documentary I saw what jag Brando is.
To get paid a record amount of millions and come to the set fat and not read the script.

reply

oh, wtf???
i have this "box", but i'm not a native speaker, so i have some trouble to understand what people say in english, and this director, come on, has he had throat cancer or something? it's even harder to understand what he says!

that's something i find unacceptable. you can put english subtitles on the movie, but not on the extras. what if a deaf guy buys the dvd? he must have someone to explain him what is being said? i've seen that in several DVD's i've bought in US

I bought the non-box set version of this movie, I think it just got released in Australia about three or four months ago, and the director's commentary is on it. And yeah he sounds like he has throat cancer or something, it's pretty hard to listen to. Poor guy.

I agree the extras should be captioned as well as the movie, especially in this case. It is grueling to listen to, but it was worth it for me. And you gotta give Hubie credit for being willing to do a commentary knowing it would be hard to understand. He did have cancer and had most of his voice-box removed.
