Is the DVD box set worth getting?

I loved the original film and I saw both the original and the box set with threee DVDs on sale. Is the box set worth getting if u loved the original? It's kind of expensive but Criterion always puts out excellent prints.

It's totally worth getting. I haven't even seen the Jimi and Otis disc, but the disc of extra material alone makes it worth while. So many clips from bands that were never even featured in the film, and longer sets from those that were. The main reason I bought it was for the Who's extra numbers, and they are staggering. But also of great note is the almost complete set by the Mammas and Pappas, Country Joe knocking out a fine rendition of Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine, Paul Butterfield, Janis... The list goes on. Plus the commentary on the main film, by festival producer Lou Adler and director DA Pennebaker, is both informative and enjoyable. And whilst the price may be a little high, I would say that it's most definitely worth it!

Hope this helps!

The only number missing frm the DVDs is Pictures Of Lily, which I found on youtube-

Is there a Region 4 (or even Region 2) DVD available?

reply

Check on Amazon.com. They usually list it if there are various regions.

reply

What's on Amazon appears to be Region 1 only.

reply

Then I'm afraid u have your answer. Might I suggest getting a DVD player that plays ALL regions? They're not that expensive.

reply

Region 1 is NTSC, and I live in a PAL country. I'm not sure an NTSC disk would work in a PAL DVD player, even a multizone one. I suppose it might work in my laptop though...

It is definitely worth purchasing. However, there didn’t seem to be any effort to clean-up the original footage.
It’s grainy, scratched, and in some places you can clearly see a hair on the screen. I was pretty surprised that no attempt was made (IMO) to take advantage of the technology and restore it frame-by-frame. It’s as if they simply took all of the film, converted it to digital…..and that was all.
