according to the gallery exhibit in NYC, probably not because JW think's they (the unreleased films, Hag in a Black Leather Jacket. Multiple Maniacs, Mondo Trasho...)are awful.

Personally, IF you are a true JW fan you won't care about that.

reply

hey, i agree. im not saying their bad im just saying what Waters via the museum said about it. so i guess your saying JW isn't a true JW fan.

reply

Yeah! If you really love John Waters, you won't give a *beep* about what he says.

Well said. John wasn't trying to make a movie, he was making crap. Everyone knew it was crap, that's what made it so fun. This film was a great start for John. From gutter crap came a craving for more, that's why each of his movies doubled in profit.

In "Shock" he actually said that "Multiple Maniacs" is his favorite film of his (at least at the time that he wrote the book). The only one he really doesn't seem to like is "Hag In A Black Leather Jacket".

I've seen it. It's excellent. I think the problem with a rerelease would be the cost of licsensing the music. The movie soundtrack is basically a crazy Waters mix-tape full of wierd 50s & 60s novelty records and B-sides. They may not be able to get the rights to some of the tracks and to change it would just suck.

That too. But more realistically, MONDO TRASHO is very much a film of its time. Long sections with seemingly no real significance (the several minutes spent on Mary Vivian Pearce waiting for a bus, etc.) Heavily influenced by the underground film movement, stylistically very out of date.

I'm not saying this takes away from its value for what it is. But, in terms of marketability 40 years later, it just wouldn't be a commercially viable idea. The early films would have to be released in a box set with more commercial Waters titles, but considering that PINK FLAMINGOS, FEMALE TROUBLE and DESPERATE LIVING (all of which are also examples of films that ultimately have a limited marketability value, despite how much us Waters fan love them!) were just released on special edition DVDs not too long ago, I doubt that they would re-release them in a DVD box set this soon.

I have seen both MONDO TRASHO and MULTIPLE MANIACS and feel that they are not "awful" at all for what they are. MULTIPLE MANIACS in particular has some great dialogue. But ultimately, I think you would have to be an extremely hardcore John Waters fan to enjoy these (I imagine that casual viewers who are just fans of HAIRSPRAY and SERIAL MOM would not appreciate these as much). Also, I cannot imagine anyone who is not interested in underground filmmaking and midnight movies of the late 1960s-early 70s would enjoy these films much if at all.

Similarly, there have been no DVDs of the Warhol films (EMPIRE might just fit on one disc..), of the Kuchar films, or Kenneth Anger. There is simply no perceived commercial market for these films on DVD, I imagine.

I need more parts...

John has said that Mondo Trasho won't be re-released because it has issues with music rights. Though this is true, he is probably using this as an excuse to pull it from distribution, as he thinks this film is awful, and should've only been twenty minutes long when it's actually ninety.

There's some fairly esoteric stuff on DVD, so I think that "perceived commercial viability" (I hate encountering such bloodless corporatespeak, particularly in forums that adress the arts) is less an issue than you'd think. It's more or less up to the rights holders, and with so many unreleased titles in all their respective back catalogues, their selection process in many cases is arbitrary. This, other Waters titles, and perhaps even Warhol's 'Empire,' will likely be available on DVD within the next five years -- if not in the US, then somewhere (if not already). Between the time this last message was posted and now, at least one NTSC collection of Kenneth Anger's films has been released.

www.stumpydisks.com carries it

Brutallo.com carries it as well, and also Multiple Maniacs and John Waters' heavy influence George Kuchar's films (Hold Me While I'm Naked)

I found a bootleg dvd of Mondo Trasho on ebay, you can also find Multiple Maniacs, there is also a bootleg dvd called Divine Waters which includes The Diane Linkletter story.

As a Waters fan i have to say that Mondo Trasho is an overlong and boring film which does not hold up well. As Waters once said there are times when he's tempted to take it out of distrubution but can see that its ok to see the film if you have watched all the others.
Only worth watching if you are a hardcore John Waters fan.

I have a copy of mondo trasho and multiple. Any traders?

reply

Do you have the VHSs of them? Im just curious to compare my copies with others. Im at work right now and I forget what my Multiple Maniacs looks like but Mondo Trasho is a pale green color with a cartoony depiction of Divine on the front and its on a label called Substance.

I downloaded this same dvd and I can clear up the quality for you. I use to own the VHS version of it (lucky me, got it for $1 at a video store that was switching everything to DVD) but my VCR went bad and ate it up. The video quality is actually better in this downloadable dvd than the original VHS. It seems much clearer and brighter than it was on VHS. The sound is pretty much the same. It seems a little sharper on this DVD, but that's about it. And unless John Rereleases it and has it remastered or remixed, this download is the best version ever available. Beware though, there are some torrent versions available that are missing entire scenes!

I recently heard him say that the music rights would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, so he is not going to release it. however, he certainly likes the film!
