ZZZzz....

What a waste of time. I watched an hour of it and it did nothing but D..R..A..G with a pointless plot and incredibly bad acting.

It is boring but what a great film to see late 1960s Hollywood. The vintage cars (I forgot how many convertibles were on the road then:)) and wonderful buildings-some look the same today.

Lol! I'm watching right now & outside of the retro factor making it kinda cool, I gotta agree. Boooriiing...& like the other person said- the acting is astonishingly awful.

Makes me wonder what the reaction to this was back then.

I *ucking loved it! Looks like I'm alone... n'er mind.

It is a great movie. How could it not be, it was directed and written by the best.
How he got the city and it's culture as an outsider is pretty unbelievable.
It is amazing how much the city has changed and even more so how it hasn't.

Your not alone.. some of us lived through the period of this film. Nam was raging, the draft loomed over many, the uncertainty of tomorrow, and the seeking of meaning and value in a conflicted world, glimmers of hope now and then. Out of the gloom of the times rose some of the best music of the century, a bit of which we see and hear by Spirit.. Sure, its not a film for everyone, but for some of us, its a glimps back in time. Its also a lot of fun for its driving scenes, to see the city as it was in the day. I wish that Demy spent even more time in traffic.

I dug the meaningless hatred.

A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep.

Artsy fartsy. I guess you had to be there.

I love this movie. The plot is not pointless as you mention, we have a main character who is lost; has no sense of direction. There is a lure to this mysterious woman. There is the war, death, the future.
Then we have a woman who has also lost her direction in life. This is about life and how it isn't always so well scripted.

I agree. I think this film was representative of the time. Remember that not that many films were even about youth, fewer about the war, and even fewer about the dread of being drafted. Most guys lived their lives to avoid the draft - it meant certain death or a godawful experience if you lived.

The pace of films was different then too so if this dragged (and I thought it did) that was typical. don't take my word for it - watch more older movies! They all have redeeming qualities.

I appreciate what Demy was trying to do, and it held my interest (although mainly for the late 60's LA scenery), but man oh man, the acting was just atrocious, awful, really fouled up would could have otherwise been a classic in th emould of Five Easy Pieces. Also, I have a feeling Linklater saw this film before shooting Slacker (instead of one guy just wandering around LA aimlessly, we have different characters wandering around Austin, TX aimlessly).

I was really astounded by how awful and boring this movie was. Certainly the lifeless performances of Aimée and Lockwood (one of the least charismatic-- aborted-- leading men of cinema) are responsible for inducing this state of torpor into the viewer. I won't even comment Alexandra Hay. I never thought too much of Anouk's acting abilities, but this must be her absolute nadir, she was truly Razzie-worthy. Some people would justify her by saying that she's acting in a different language, after all, but I never understood this reasoning. Take Depardieu for example: he could barely speak English when he shot "Green Card", yet he managed to knock everyone out with his performance. Eiji Okada couldn't speak French and learned all his lines phonetically when he did "Hiroshima Mon Amour", but it was damn fine work. Aimée's case is similar to Stéphane Audran's, Marion Cotillard's, Sophia Loren's etc.. People tend to defend them in English-speaking roles, thinking that they're much better when they act in their own language. If more people could understand French or Italian enough to judge a performance, they would probably think that they aren't very good to begin with. Anyway, this movie sucks on every possible level and is definitely a black mark against Demy's resume.

I can forgive the lack of story and bad acting because I was entranced by the visuals. Never have I been so enthralled by a man walking and driving around LA.

Finally found a copy to watch and was disappointed to say the least. The film was let down by a plodding storyline that, even with the visuals of old L.A., made it very dull. The acting was stilted and didn't convince.

The film was very boring but I loved the location scenes. You can see the 1960's dying right in front of you. I expected to see the Manson family walking along the streets looking for...

Gloria was pretty dope to look at...
