I am not quite sure about the following point, but i think the plot in the movie is like this. As the russian cosmonaut had to conduct his spacewalk tethered with a line; his ship had to be close to Ironman 1. The cosmonaut did move his ship within range of Ironman 1, but when the hatch on Ironman 1 was blown and not opened slowly this caused Ironman 1 to drift away from the Soviet ship and out of range. That is the reason why he couldn`t spacewalk to Ironman 1 and had to move his ship in order to get in range again so he could move over to help Stoney (which he gave oxygen).

Brave clumsy little cosmonaut.
shareIt seemed like an unacceptable coincedence that the Russian's oxygen equipment hooked up with the American's space suit. No leaks? Kind of a long shot.
shareActually in te novelization of the movie (which was the orignial work modified by Cadin himself) He notes that the Russian's oxygen hose was not a perfect fit for Stoney's suit and was leaking but had enough of a seal to hold him until Doughtry hooked up a proper line :)
