The President and Director of Manned space craft both selfish

The only reason the President and Gregory Pecks character who was Director of the Program saved the astronauts was to save their own asses. They really couldnt care less about the astronauts. It was only for themselves. Both selfish and cold hearted, and to think they got the most accolades!

Hate to say it, but that's what made this film so REALISTIC. That's exactly how things are done in Washington DC.

Exactly. Another reason why MAROONED stands out so well from most science fiction movies before it (excluding, of course, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.)
