Marooned and Cinerama

Way back when, I swear I read an article somewhere that stated that Columbia Pictures was going to start releasing some movies in Cinerama. I swear the two that were mentioned were "Marooned" and "Mackenna's Gold." Of course, when the time arrived for their premieres, Cinerama wasn't used and Cinerama was virtually dead. I haven't seen "Mackenna's Gold" but if you notice how "Marooned" is photographed, it fits very nicely on a curved screen with objects placed in the center of the screen with the sides used as space. Hardly anything is shown at 90 degrees to a wide object filling the screen. The swooping camera coming down to catch Gregory Peck's car seemed to be a dead giveaway. Does anyone else remember that article? What do you think of the Cinerama angle? Can anyone from Columbia/Sony comment?

By then (1969) Cinerama was just another 70mm film format meant to project onto a standard flat screen. The last produced-for-a-curved-screen, 3-strip Cinerama feature shot was 1962's The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm.

Sounds right - the film was shot on 35mm, but has also been blown up to 70mm. Either way, the film looks pretty good for 1969.
