Inspiration for Jackass, Fear Factor?

People doing practically anything for money?

Quite possibly, although I blame the Internet and reality TV for those. This reminded me of that episode of "The Simpsons" where Homer is under Mr. Burns' command, doing any number of degrading things for a few bucks (though normally he does them for free).

That episode was inspired by the film, actually! Is that the same one where Homer, uh, gets to know a panda?

reply

Yes, that indeed is the episode where Homer dresses up as the zoo's new female panda and becomes a "panda bride." It's also the one where Homer dresses in a diaper in a public restroom ("Baby made a boom-boom!") and Mr. Burns throws fish entrails into a crowd at the Thanksgiving parade dressed as Santa Claus ("Merry Fishmas!"). It also has that indignant lady who keeps losing her glasses when Homer shocks her ("Well, I never!); that type of character was a staple on shows like "Sanford and Son" and "All in the Family."

You're absolutely right that "The Magic Christian" inspired that episode. I think a lot of people who saw that episode weren't familiar with "The Magic Christian." I saw that episode before I saw the film. It's still funny without seeing the movie, but it adds another dimension if you understand the reference.

Many people do, and it's becoming increasingly acceptable. Today the pursuit of wealth supercedes most everything else.
