Knotts Is Fine. The Script Isn't. (SPOILERS!!!!!)
****SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!*****
A few people have suggested that this is a good movie, but Don Knotts is wrong for it. I think the opposite is true.
Knotts is the best thing about this movie. It's a good performance, and he's the right guy to play this character.
I just don't think the movie is funny, because the script isn't funny. I hate saying that, because I'm a longtime Nat Hiken fan. But I just didn't find this movie to be funny or clever. There are no memorable lines, and the storyline and plot twists don't always make sense.
The last twenty minutes of the movie are a mess. Knotts goes back and forth between Anne Francis and Maggie Peterson in a way that's not plausible. (By the end, neither one should want him.) Are we supposed to believe that Anne Francis secretly loves him, or it's all a put-on?
The ending is a real let-down too. After all that's happened, there should be a slam-bang, 'Mad Mad Mad Mad World'-type finish. Instead, it just ends quietly at the wedding chapel.
There are some funny ideas here and there, and I love the cast, especially the old-time sitcom character actors. But overall, the script just isn't there.
