Thorndyke special

does anyone know what car the Thorndyke special is? you know, the yellow car with black trim and nuber 14 on it?

reply

i believe it is a 1967 Jaguar E-Type Hardtop. I hope that helps

reply

He was seen driving the jag earlier in the movie. "However, the yellow Thorndike Special" was a Buick Apollo a hybrid British (?) car powered by an aluminum Buick 215 CID V8.

reply

maybe a little late, but...go to http://www.intermeccanica.org/vehicles/apollo/apollo.htm

reply

Thorndyke's silver car in one of the early races is the E-Type hardtop you're thinking of (with the ugly chrome bumper overriders as well--ugh).

reply

does anyone know what happened to it after production?

reply

Yeah, those ugly full surround bumpers are a terrible blight on such a beauty (I believe we have American legislation to thank for this defacement) - it looks so terrible, trying to follow the lines of the "mouth" opening at the front (the simple straight through-line bumper looked so much better) and the similar situation at the back, to prevent obscuring the number plate.
The funny thing is that on a RACE car, the heavy, extra-thick steel bumpers are always pretty much the FIRST thing to go, so their appearance on this car IN A RACE is not only ugly and totally unnecessary, it's also contrary to the objective of the sport. Were they PURPOSELY trying to uglify this classic?? I know it was driven by the baddie, but still, that's no reason, surely?

i did some searching on the internet, and it appears the car is an apollo 3500GT http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_4609-Apollo-3500-GT.html

and this link contains further info on the car.

The car Thorndyke drove in the El Dorado was the Buick-powered IMC Apollo. The Jaguar was driven by Thorndyke at Riverside. Which was the car Thorndyke drove in Mexico?

Live in Your World. Play in Ours. - PlayStation 2

reply

I believe it was a Ferrari. At least that was what Thorndyke drove after he sabatoged the VW with Irish Coffee.

reply

Thorndyke drives four different cars:-

Silver Jag E-type in forst race, which sounds like it's got a V8 in it rather than the standard Jag engine;

Some kind of late 50s/early 1960s V8-powered racer in the Mexican scene, like a Devin or one of them Ol'Yaller things; you spot it when the donkey cart is towing it away.

Red late 50s Ferrari 250GT TDF in the Herbie on irish coffee race;

and the "Thorndyke Special" - an Apollo 3500GT (with a very potent V8 in it from the sound it makes, probably ws the 5-litre model; Jim says "over 400 cubes" which means it may have a 7-litre motor). wonder why Disney used such a rare car to play a relatively big part of the movie?

Also, did anyone else spot how Thorndyke's overalls matched the colours on each car he drove?

reply

Yeah, I think they matched his overalls to the car so people would figure it out...But the red car that Thorndyke drives at Riverside seems like it's the same car model that Jim buys later that Herbie wrecks - a Lamborghini. I guess I'm wrong...

reply

Nah, The Lamborghini had some weird headlight set-up while Thorndykes red car looked more typical up front but both are Italian. Jims Lamborghini wasn't trashed though as they actually used a full-scale Jaguar E-Type fiberglass model and I have no idea where it get one.

reply

I do think it's in the demo derby scene in herbie fully loaded, if it aint, it looks just like it...

reply

JAGUAR
