wanted to give up on this; but then, out of interest cuz . . .

It was so hard to watch this, and I'll give some reasons, but thought I should struggle thru, given the time [1969] it was made. Me being a novice film buff even back then, I never would've had a chance to catch films like this (even in San Diego and L.A.). Like the person said in the 'copy' thread, all those subjects in one film: lesbian, incest, rape, murder/revenge, etc.
Here's my gripes:
The editing was sooo bad, continuity was poor, and with those two connected, it would've only taken a small effort on the filmmaker to make this easier to watch and more likeable.
The dialog stunk and consequently the characters were not developed at all. I didn't even know for sure if Todd was Abilene's brother, uncle, cousin or what, for a long time; That couldn't have taken much extra effort.
OMG That opening burial scene! WTF was he thinking? What a waste of celluloid.
The sets were a hodge-podge of picnic items, old western stuff, and antiques/collectibles that they threw in there to make it look western.
The distance shot of the ranch-house front was not the same as the close up. Why was that?
And come on! Todd couldn't even pull off (or down) his jeans! She never would've put up with (in real life) that buckle on her belly and hips. Seriously!
I could go on with more . . .
But . . . she sure had a pretty body to look at.

Agreed. This film was a real chore to get through. I had serious problems with the sluggish pacing and meandering narrative.
