...in celebration of the Martin Luther King holiday

Saw it last night. Interesting film. According to the intro, Gordon Parks had been trying to make this movie for four years prior to its release. Then along came John Cassavettes who got him a five-minute meeting with the right person, who then provided the help needed for this film to see the light of day. Interesting.

I recorded the movie on January 18th but finally got a chance to see it today. I had never heard of the movie then I found out it was the directorial debut of Parks. I was not expecting much.

As it turns out I love the movie. I enjoyed the story, the acting is good, but what I thought made it really interesting is how it dealt with so many different topics. A lot was going on yet the story was told in a very logical way and the pace of the movie was consistent but it never felt rushed. There are many very important and timeless lessons in the movie as well. It's not at all dated even though it was set almost a hundred years ago and made close to fifty years ago.
