Compare and Contrast: This Film and 'Lord of the Flies'

They both strip their characters down to primitivism and brutality, but whereas Peter Brook's version of LOTF is deep and rich in allegory and symbolism (as is Golding's novel), and in stunning atmosphere and cinematography, the cast of LS leaves that of the earlier film in the dust when it comes to characterization and acting skill. Granted that Brook used amateurs in LOTF, but LS, in not doing so and casting as it did, earns a place in great filmmaking.

A very good comparison. This time, instead of little kids, it's kids in their late teens. You never see any parents. They have been left to take care of themselves, and their behavior just devolves throughout, all the way up to the violent ending.
