Well I see what you mean, but the father just knew he could not change his son's mind to come ashore, so rather than arguing the last time they would see eachother, he decided to just accept his son's answer and get on the boat.

All made sense to me. When I watched it - I thought the father was mad, A: To leave his son and B: To go to certain death..
