DVD Release

Facets Video is releasing "Korol Lir" on January 30. I pre-ordered it. I already have a copy of "Korol Lir," but it is a Russian import without subtitles. The Facets Video DVD of "Gamlet" was excellent, so I'm hoping the same will be true of their version of "Korol Lir."

UPS delivered my Facets Video DVD of "Korol Lir" yesterday. It was excellent. It had on onscreen introduction by the theater director Peter Sellers, who interestingly enough was in Jean-Luc Godard's 1987 version of "King Lear," which I have on VHS.

Thanks for the news, tsf-1962! I'm ordering this from Facets now. How would you say the quality is? I haven't had the greatest luck with Facets (Decalogue and Satantango were ungood).

I thought the photography and music were more than excellent, but the Shakespeare play was manhandled badly. Chunks of scenes giving sense are missing, what's left is a few beautiful scenes and then suddenly all the characters drop dead.

Sounds as though you don't like translations of Shakespeare in general, which is quite narrow-minded. You also seem to dislike Russian in general, which is also narrow-minded. Though it likely has references to Stalin, it was made after the Stalin era.

The play is stark and bleak.

Do you mean Sellar's commentary is overly gay as in happy or as in homosexual?

Terrible comment, all around.
