I was wondering about that myself.

I penned the book Life After Kes, which surrounds Loach's gritty northen classic Kes.

The dead bird had been given to them by British Falconers’ Society and had died of natural causes. It was delivered to the set in a block of ice.

It actually isn't a stupid question at all. In the interview with Ken Loach he said it was one of the possibilities if they couldn't get a dead one from somewhere. There are SEVERAL instances where animals have been killed in the filming of a movie. This is well known.

Glad to hear it didn't happen in KES.

Read the Wikipedia article for Dai Bradley. It tells how he thought one of the kestrels used for the film was killed for real (because originally they told him they were going to have to kill one for the final scene), and that until shooting was over, he actually believed they had killed one. He even ran back to the barn where they were keeping the kestrels, to see if one was missing. Only then did they inform him that they used one that had died naturally.

It made me wonder if they did that to him on purpose to make him act better? If so, it was rather a dirty trick.
