Do not know why Criterion released this picture without subtitles. Unless you are from Yorkshire, it is almost impossible to understand 90 percent of the dialogue. The young boy is wonderful, and I am sure it is a terrific film, but it is impossible to tell when one understands so little of what is being said.
shareJust stick with it, you'll get there in the end. Yorkshire is not difficult to understand, just listen carefully.
shareIt might be that the people in charge of subtitles couldn't understand it themselves! I have the Ken Loach boxset, which includes "The Price of Coal" (also in Yorkshire dialect). As a native Yorkshire speaker, I find it almost funny watching it with subtitles, and they've got much of it wrong (or sometimes just ignore particular lines of dialogue).
shareLOL Yes, subtitles would have helped. I understood most of it, but the bits I couldn't understand were of course some rather important bits. But I'm not, in my case, it was the Yorkshire accent only; I often wish there were subtitles on more standard dialect British films and American films, too.
